European choice experiment about surgical NEC
Dear members,
In case of severe necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in a preterm born infant, the dilemma sometimes arises if laparotomy is still in the best interest of the child or if comfort care would be more appropriate. The University Medical Center Groningen (the Netherlands) has developed a choice experiment with several hypothetical situations in which the decision of laparotomy or comfort care must be made. This allows for analyzing the implicit considerations involved in the decision, which can be used to create transparency. Ultimately, your expert knowledge might even be incorporated into a prospective decision aid.
